Islamabad  - At least 50 people were killed and around 200, including some foreigners, injured Saturday in an apparent suicide bomb attack on the five-star Marriot hotel in Pakistan's capital Islamabad, witnesses and officials said.

Witnesses said a vehicle, apparently a mini truck packed with a large amount of explosives, approached the main entrance of the hotel and blew up at about 7.30 local time (1330 GMT), severely damaging the five-story building, where hundreds of people had been staying.

Budapest  - Police have used tear-gas to break up rioting right-wing demonstrators at a protest in Budapest on Saturday evening, security officials have said.

Several hundred sympathisers of the so-called 64-Counties Movement demonstrated in the city centre in response to an earlier rally by the anti-fascist Hungarian Democratic Charter, at which Hungary's socialist prime minister Ferenc Gyurcsany had appeared as a speaker.

Berlin/Islamabad  - At least six Germans have been slightly injured in the massive bomb attack on the Marriot luxury hotel in Pakistan's capital Islamabad on Saturday, according to the German foreign ministry.

There was no indication that Germans were among the more than 50 people killed in the attack earlier in the day, a spokeswoman said, but added that this was based on only preliminary information.

"We have no complete picture yet and continue to be in close contact with the Pakistani authorities," she said.

Cologne, Germany  - Violent demonstrators who thwarted a far-right rally against "Islamification" in Cologne on Saturday continued clashes with police for hours afterwards.

Only 50 supporters of the anti-immigrant group Pro Cologne managed to reach a city square for the scheduled rally against plans to construct a grand mosque in the German city.

An anti-right sit-down by 5,000 mostly peaceful demonstrators had blockaded every entrance to the square.

"I saw a vehicle approaching the main entrance of the hotel and then it blew up," an injured witness, Mukhtar Ahmad, told Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa before he was taken to hospital by ambulance.

A security official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the deadly vehicle was a truck loaded with around half-a-ton of explosives.
