Washington, Oct 29 : Engineers with NASA''s Phoenix Mars Lander mission are trying to extend the lander''s survival by gradually shutting down some of its instruments and heaters.
Originally scheduled to last 90 days, Phoenix has completed a fifth month of exploration in the Martian arctic.
As expected, with the Martian northern hemisphere shifting from summer to fall, the lander is generating less power due to shorter days and fewer hours of sunlight reaching its solar panels.

Washington, Oct 29: Scientists have said that NASA satellite data can improve forecasts of dust storms in the American Southwest in ways that can benefit public health managers.
Led by investigators Stanley Morain of the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, and William Sprigg of the University of Arizona in Tucson, scientists evaluated the influence of space-based observations on predictions of dust storms.
Using NASA satellite data, forecasters could more accurately predict the timing of two out of three dust events.
Damascus - A Syrian court reduced the sentences for twelve political activists on Wednesday who had been handed six-year jail terms for "publishing false news and threatening Syria's national morale."
Syria last December arrested the activists for their association with an organization called "Damascus Declaration group."
Established in 2005, the group includes Syrian intellectuals and calls for democratic reform in Syria and the recognition of Lebanon as an independent state.
The Syrian court reduced the original prison sentence from six years to two and a half years.

Frankfurt - Volkswagen AG shares dropped sharply Wednesday after the key shareholder in Europe's biggest carmaker said it was moving to try to stabilize VW's stock, which soared earlier this week.
In a statement, luxury sports carmaker Porsche AG said that, depending on the state of the market, it planned "to settle hedging transactions in the amount of up to 5 per cent of ordinary Volkswagen shares."
"This may result in an increase in the liquidity of the Volkswagen ordinary shares," Porsche said.
