Asian stock markets dive on recession fears

JapanTokyo - Asian stocks, led by Tokyo and Seoul, plummeted for a third-straight day Friday on fears of a worldwide recession, defying an overnight rise on Wall Street.

Japan's benchmark Nikkei 225 Stock Average lost nearly 10 per cent of its value, tumbling below 8,000 for the first time since May 2003, on indications the global financial crisis was beginning to hit the nation's exporters.

Sensex closes below 11k on recession fearsNew Delhi - India's benchmark Sensex on Friday crashed 11 per cent to end trading at a three-year low of below 9,000 as investors sold heavily after the central bank disappointed them by keeping key interest rates unchanged.

The 30-share Sensitive Index, which had lost 912 points in the last two sessions, crashed 10.92 per cent shortly after a credit and monetary review was announced by the Reserve Bank of India.

Ryanair closes base in eastern Spain

Ryanair closes base in eastern SpainValencia, Spain  - The low-cost airline Ryanair on Friday announced the closure of its base in the eastern Spanish city of Valencia, citing the refusal of the regional authorities to discuss a proposal for a joint promotion project.

The Valencia authorities had refused to "engage in constructive discussions in relation to the promotion of the airport and its routes across Ryanair's network in Europe," the airline said in a statement.

Defence Minister Antony agrees to allow private sector in defence production

A K AntonyNew Delhi, Oct 24 : Defence Minister A. K. Antony today said that the private sector participation in defence production has been allowed and foreign direct investment is allowed upto 26 per cent.

Addressing the National Seminar on defence offsets being organised by the Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses (IDSA) here, Antony said that private sector will henceforth require industrial licence only if it is stipulated under the requirement for defence industry.

Uttar Pradesh University cancels Rahul Gandhi''s function

Rahul Gandhi, Uttar PradeshKanpur, Oct 24 : Uttar Pradesh administration today cancelled interactive session of Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi with the students of the Chandrashekhar Azad University.

According to sources, the Vice Chancellor of the University had given instructions to cancel the programme.

However, Rahul, who reached the University as per the scheduled programme, met the students in the cafeteria, instead of auditorium.
