"Mugabe must go," Sarkozy says

"The president of Zimbabwe, Robert Mugabe, must go," Sarkozy said during a speech commemorating the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which is on Wednesday.

Peace and social justice work efforts win Right Livelihood Awards

SwedenStockholm- Winners of the 2008 Right Livelihood Awards, often called the Alternative Nobel Prize, said Monday the awards would help efforts to give women a voice in war-torn Somalia and help female rape victims in conflicts ranging from the Balkans to the Congo.

Asha Hagi of Somalia and Swiss-born Monika Hauser, founder of German-based Medica Mondiale, shared the 2008 award with Amy Goodman of the United States, who founded the daily grassroots global TV/radio news hour Democracy Now, and Krishnammal and Sankaralingam Jagannathan of India, and their organization Land for the Tillers' Freedom (LAFTI).

Turkish minister against moves to allow prisoners conjugal visits

Ankara, TurkeyAnkara- Turkey's justice minister on Monday said he was against moves to allow prison inmates conjugal visits, the Anadolu news agency reported.

"We treat with respect all requests but at the moment the Justice Ministry has no plans or thoughts to change the way it is at the moment," Mehmet Ali Sahin told reporters.

Sahin's statements came after the head of a parliamentary human rights commission said he had received many letters from prisoners seeking the right to have sex with their partners.

The suggested changes have received support from a number of members of parliament.

Managing waste at mini Thermal Power Plant in Punjab

Muktsar, Punjab MapMuktsar (Punjab), Dec. 8 : An independent mini thermal power plant being run on agriculture waste in Mutksar District of southwest Punjab, has motivated the local authorities to promote such initiatives.

The agriculture waste, which was earlier destroyed by Punjab farmers, is now being utilized to generate a good income here at the mini-Thermal Power Plant.

Spread over 30 acres, this mini 6-megawatt thermal power plant generates 160,000 units of electricity everyday which is sold to Punjab State Electricity Board for further distribution.

It is a fact that Indian part of Punjab had little water, as most of the canal networks were in Pakistani Punjab. The Punjabi Durbar programme unfortunately has not taken the trouble to update its facts. In its latest programme, the Radio wants its listeners to believe that the situation is similar to what was prevailing five decades ago.
