Perth’s new arts centre snubs Heath Ledger’s name

Melbourne, Dec 12 : The new arts centre in Perth, which had been promised to be named after late Aussie actor Heath Ledger, will no longer be named after him.

According to Culture and Arts Minister John Day, the centre in Northbridge will now be called the State Theatre Centre of Western Australia, with a theatre within it named after Ledger, reports PerthNow.

Former premier Alan Carpenter had announced Ledger's name at the theatre construction site less than six months ago, with the late actor's father, Kim Ledger, standing by his side.

Riga - The Latvian parliament completed an extraordinary 20- hour sitting Friday morning as part of its bid to win approval from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for an economic assistance package thought to be worth up to 6 billion dollars.

The parliament commenced its sitting at 9 am on Thursday and finally broke up at 5 am Friday morning.

According to the legislation passed by parliament, Latvia will save around 1 billion lats (1.85 billion dollars) by cutting spending and increasing revenues in 2009, a sum equivalent to 7 per cent of the small Baltic state's gross domestic product.

During a meeting with UNMIN chief Ian Martin, here, Nepali Congress leaders complained that monitoring of the Maoist army camps has not been effective and that UNMIN failed to check the violent activities involving the members of the People''s Liberation Army (PLA).

"The PLA men went out of their camps and engaged in violent activities a number of times," they added.

Sweden: US Senate rejection of loan package increases uncertainty

Stockholm - The Swedish government said Friday it was concerned over the US Senate's failure to agree on a loan package for the troubled US car industry, which owns Swedish carmakers Volvo and Saab.

The news from Washington also impacted the Stockholm bourse that dropped some 3.5 per cent in early trading.

Speaking to Swedish televison news on the sidelines of a European Union summit in Brussels, Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt said there was "more uncertainty" after the US decision.

Carmaker Volvo is owned by US auto giant Ford while Swedish-based Saab is owned by General Motors. Both US giants have posted huge losses and have said they were considering selling their Swedish subsidiaries.
