The significance of celebrations in the northeast deserves special mention since the residents in the northeast States opted to join official celebrations, defying threats by militants.

In Manipur's capital Imphal, people joined the celebrations at various places despite the boycott call given by some underground groups. Residents opted to be a part of the Republic day revelry.

Val d'Isere, France - World Cup leader Lindsey Vonn of the United States was the provisional winner on Tuesday in the world championship super-g ski race.

Vonn, 25, claimed her first career world title when she conquered the demanding Piste Rhones-Alpes in 1 minute 20.73 seconds. Vonn came second in the super-g and downhill at the 2007 worlds.

Marie Marchand-Arvier of France was ranked a surprise second in 1:21.07 minutes and Andrea Fischbacher of Austria was third in 1:21.13 minutes as all favourites in the

Kampala - The Ugandan army said Tuesday that it rescued nearly 120 civilians from the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) when it stormed the rebel group's camps in the north-east of the Democratic Republic of Congo over the weekend.

A total of 119 people, mostly women and children, were rescued in the joint operation carried out by Ugandan, Congolese and Sudanese forces against the LRA, Major Felix Kulayigye told Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa.

New Delhi, Feb. 3, : A physically challenged student Pawel pinned a flag on the Army Chief General Deepak Kapoor on the occasion of 50th Flag Week of the Deaf on Tuesday.

The Flag Pinning was carried out at the office of the Army Chief at South Block here.

General Kapoor appreciated the efforts of the All India Federation of Deaf (AIFD) in elevating the living quality of the deaf in coordination with the World Federation of the Deaf and other Non-governmental Organisations (NGOs).
