Lalu to contest 2009 elections from Saran

Lalu Prasad YadavChapra (Bihar), Feb 23 : Union Railway Minister and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) Chief Lalu Prasad Yadav has declared that he will contest the coming Lok Sabha elections from the Saran constituency.

Delimitation of constituencies has led to a rechristening of the Chapra seat, currently represented by Lalu, as Saran.

While denouncing the communal policies of Bharatiya Janata Party, Lalu claimed that the people would welcome the "developmental" policies of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA).

He asserted that the BJP''s prime ministerial candidate L K Advani would never succeed.

Zardari says non-state actors are threatening world peace

Asif Ali ZardariShanghai, Feb. 23 : Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari has said that the world is facing grave challenges imposed by non-state actors who are bent upon damaging world peace.

"We are not threatened by nations, but by the non-state actors," The News quoted Zardari, as saying.

Zardari said that the emergence of these elements, who have nothing to lose but everything to damage, was a new phenomenon, adding that Pakistan has been at the forefront of many worst international disputes and has managed to survive as a nation.

One in Three Young People in UK ‘Admit To Drunken Sex’

Drunken SexAccording to a survey of young Britons, almost one in three young people admit to having drunken one-night stands, later regretting them. The Sex Factor survey, a part of a report from the charity, YouthNet, into young people's attitudes towards sexual health, polled more than 2,000 young people aged 16 to 24, revealing 32% (the same number) indulged in unprotected sex while under the influence of liquor.

  • "15% invited a stranger back to their home.

I was excited and terrified, says RahmanLos Angeles/Chennai, Feb 23 : Noted music composer A. R. Rahman who created a sensation on Sunday by winning two Oscars for Best Original Song and Original Score for the movie `Slumdog Millionaire', said he was both excited and terrified.

Rahman's song `Jai Ho', received accolades from across the world.

Rahman is only the third Indian after Costume designer Bhanu Athaiya and Director Satyajit Ray to win an Oscar gold.

Athaiya was honored with an Oscar for the movie `Gandhi' in 1982 while Ray received a lifetime achievement award in 1992.

One killed as Maoists strike in Orissa

Orissa MapMalkangiri, Feb 23 : One person was killed in Gobindpali village here on Monday as Maoists set afire to a BSNL control room, a forest office and over a dozen vehicles.

Superintendent of Police Satyabrata Bhoi said that the Maoists attacked the house of construction contractor Prasanna Swain and killed him with sharp edged weapons.

The village is about 50 kilometers from Malkangiri.

The Naxals also ransacked furniture in a forest range office and a power distribution centre, which was under construction.

Additional police force has been deployed in the area in the wake of the accident.

Chidambaram to propose tax exemption for Oscar-winning Rahman

P. ChidambaramKhatkar Kalan (Punjab)/ New Delhi, Feb 23 : Congratulating the team of ''Slumdog Millionaire'' for its resounding success at the Oscars, Home Minister P. Chidambaram today said he would ask the Finance Ministry to exempt from taxation all cash prizes won by A R Rahman at the Oscars.

"If the Oscars carry any cash award, I would recommend to the Finance Minister that it should be exempt from taxation," Chidambaram said while addressing a public function at Khatkar Kalan in Punjab today.
