Kabul - Taliban militants publicly executed a young couple for eloping in western Afghanistan, after the family of the young woman handed the pair over for Taliban justice. Gholam Dastagir Azaad, the provincial governor for western Nimruz province, said relatives had found the couple hiding in a house in Khash Rud district of the province after they eloped.

The family then delivered the couple to Taliban militants in Lokhi area, some 40 kilometres from the district centre.

Amsterdam - Dutch electrical giant Philips announced a first quarter loss of 57 million euros (76 million dollars) on Tuesday, admitting a "further significant deterioration in our markets."The first quarter profit for 2008, by comparison, was 294 million euros.

Chief Executive Officer Gerard Kleisterlee said "our medical- division sales are also now affected. In our first quarter, like-on- like sales from last year fell from 5.97 to 5.08 billion euros."

Hong Kong - Hong Kong shares soared to their highest levels in four months Tuesday as confidence surged through the market on the city's first day of trading after the Easter holiday. The blue-chip Hang Seng Index rose 678.75 points, or 4.55 per cent, in brisk trading to close at 15,580.16, the highest level since early December.

Turnover was 75.4 billion Hong Kong dollars (9.72 billion US dollars), sharply higher than in recent weeks as traders raced to catch up with gains in the US and China markets following the four-day Easter break in Hong Kong.

Islamabad, Apr. 14 : Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari has assured a judicial investigation into the killing of the three Baloch leaders that caused rampant riots in Balochistan.

“The government will leave no stone unturned to expose the culprits involved in the murder of the Baloch leaders,” The Nation quoted Zardari, as saying.

Zardari, along with Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani interacted with PPP parliamentarians from NWFP at Monday at Aiwan-e-Sadr.

The Foreign Ministry and National Tourism Administration have urged Chinese travelers to postpone trips to Thailand, two days after Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva declared a state of emergency in Bangkok and five surrounding provinces, the state-run China Daily reported Tuesday.

Chinese citizens already in Thailand are being cautioned to stay away from the rioting.
