ISPs sues DoT on the contentious issue of forced spectrum surrender The directive by the Department of Telecom (DoT) - whereby Internet Service Providers in India have been compelled to surrender spectrum falling in the Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) space - has become a contentious issue. Taking a hard line stance against the edict, the Internet Service Providers Association of India (ISPAI) has filed a petition with the Telecom Dispute Settlement and Appellate Tribunal.

US banks, markets, sweating "stress tests"

Federal Reserve chief Ben BernankeWashington  - As early as Friday, the US government is expected to announce the results of its "stress tests" for 19 major banks - a report that could force some banks to sell ownership stakes to the US government.

The examination has been underway since late February, when federal banking regulators said it could provide added capital to struggling large banks, according to the results of the "stress test."

Apple fires 1,600 from retail stores San Francisco  - Apple has fired some 1,600 employees from its chain of retail stores due to slackening consumer demand, the Wall Street Journal reported Friday.

The job cuts were referenced in a securities filing by Apple Thursday in which the company said it had 14,000 full-time equivalent employees in its retail division as of March 28, down from the 15,600 as of the end of December.

The move came as Apple's recent earnings report showed a drop in sales for its Mac computer line, which is the biggest earner at the stores.

UNICEFNew York  - Every 30 seconds, somewhere in the world, a child dies of malaria, and ending the scourge of the preventable disease is a major development priority, the United Nations Childrens Fund said Friday.

Despite substantial progress in the fight against malaria, especially the increased distribution of insecticide-treated nets, the disease still kills an estimated 1 million people every year, UNICEF said on the eve of World Malaria Day on Saturday.

Real Madrid's Pepe suspended for 10 matches Madrid  - The disciplinary committee of the Spanish football federation announced on Friday evening a suspension of 10 matches for Real Madrid defender Pepe, for his part in the incidents at the end of Tuesday's stormy Real-Getafe clash.

The Portugal international pushed over Getafe's Francisco Casquero for a late penalty, then kicked the veteran midfielder twice whilst he was on the ground, and hit Getafe forward Juan Albin.

Pepe had to be pulled off the field by Real goalkeeper Iker Casillas, and left insulting the match officials.
