US, Pak army improve ties to tackle Taliban, says WSJ editorialTorkham, Jan. 6 : In order to counter the increasing influence of the Taliban and Al Qaeda-linked groups along the Pak-Afghan border, the armies of the US and Pakistan are increasing bilateral co-operation, an editorial in the Wall Street Journal says.

The relationship between the two armies seems to be getting better for the first time since 2008, with both of them sharing intelligence reports and important investigation results, it added.

Now, Pak agrees to investigate Mumbai carnage ‘dossier’

Pakistan FlagIslamabad, Jan. 6 : With India providing a `dossier' of evidence to prove Pakistani links to the Mumbai attacks, Pakistan has now agreed to carry out a credible investigation based on the evidence provided by India.

Pak Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani met President Asif Ali Zardari to discuss the evidences provided by India, and agreed to carry out a probe to bring the perpetrators to book.

The two leaders said that strict action would be taken against any group found involved in the Mumbai carnage, the News reported.

Zardari also condemned state sponsored terrorism in all its forms and manifestations.

Ten killed in heavy rains in Mozambique since December

Mozambique FlagMaputo - At least 10 people have been killed in the heavy rains battering several regions of Mozambique since December, the daily paper Noticias reported Tuesday.

Nine people died in central Manica province and one in Inhambane in the south where large areas were also inundated. The rains destroyed properties across the country.

Three children were swept away by waters in the river Nhamatsane in Manica while another was electrocuted when he a fallen electricity wire in the area on New Year's Eve.

Bulgaria presses EU for permission to restart old reactors

Bulgaria MapSofia - Hit hard by the Russia-Ukraine gas row, Bulgaria on Tuesday stepped up the pressure for permission to re-start its old nuclear reactors, shut down in 2006 amid European safety concerns.

"We must prepare without delay to re-start the third reactor at Kosloduy," President Georgi Parvanov said. Bulgaria shut down two 440-megawatt, Soviet-era reactors shortly before it joined the European Union in 2007, meeting Brussels' demands.

Two even older reactors were turned off in 2002.

Parvanov said the accession contract with the EU allows Bulgaria to revive the two newer reactors in case of a crisis.
