Gene may Play Role in determining Chances of being Bitten by Mosquitoes

An open-access journal PLOS ONE-published research says chances of being bitten by mosquitoes could be associated with our genes.

The researchers said that there is some evidence that pregnancy, larger body mass, alcohol intake and increased carbon dioxide could attract mosquitoes. The researchers have evaluated 37 sets of twins and came to know about an individual's genetically-programmed scent is another factor in attracting mosquitoes.

A series of trials were carried out using identical and non-identical female twins, where dengue mosquitoes were released into a Y-shaped tube that was divided into two sections. Study researchers said that mosquitoes were allowed to fly down to either side towards the odor of their choice, which was coming from participants' hands.

Researchers wanted to know which twin they were most attracted to. It was found that identical twin pairs were more similar in attractiveness to mosquitoes than non-identical twins. The researchers said that the study may provide an insight into how human's relationship has evolved with mosquitoes. It may also help in the development of better ways to control mosquitoes and the diseases they transmit.

Study's senior author Dr. James Logan said, "By investigating the genetic mechanism behind attractiveness to biting insects such as mosquitoes, we can move closer to using this knowledge to develop better ways of keeping us safe from bites and the diseases insects can spread through bites".

The researchers have not identified a particular molecule involved in creation of an individual's scent that caused the mosquitoes to be attracted to one twin over another. In further studies, there are chances that researchers may target the molecule(s) involved.
