Frankfurt secure Europa League berth
Berlin, Aug 30 - German football side Eintracht Frankfurt defeated Azerbaijani Qarabag Agdam 2-1 at the second leg of the Europa League qualifiers to ensure a berth with a 4-1 aggregate.
Frankfurt already did the groundwork for their progress into the group stage of the Europa League at the first leg when the Germans reaped a 2-0 away victory, reports Xinhua.
Frankfurt's Alexander Meier scored the supposed opener with just eight minutes into the game Thursday but his effort was called offside. Nevertheless, Meier reloaded just two minutes later when he broke the deadlock with a left-footed volley from five metres following Sebastian Rodes cross.
The visitors from Azerbaijan restored parity in the 58th minute through Reynaldo dos Santos Silva, who was fielded two minutes earlier. Reynaldo made use of Leroy George's pass to overcome Frankfurt goalkeeper Kevin Trapp.
The 'Eagles' sealed the deal when Takashi Inui nodded into the open goal thanks to Jan Rosenthal's neat cross with 15 minutes to play for.
"We are very delighted to progress into the group stage of the Europa League," Frankfurt coach Armin Veh said. (IANS)
