Ford unveils revamped versions of its key European models
In an evident attempt to revive the sales of its vehicles in Europe and to curtail its growing losses in the region, Ford Motor unveiled revamped versions of its key European models at a Thursday event.
The revamped versions which Ford CEO Alan Mulally and other executives previewed to nearly 2,500 dealers included the Ecosport compact SUV --- the automaker's small sport-utility vehicle (SUV) that will hit the European markets in the next year-and-a-half, and will take on Nissan Motor's Juke, which has witnessed stupendous success in Europe.
Among the other vehicles which the Ford executives previewed at the event included the Kuga crossover; the overhauled Fiesta small car, which is the company's mainstay model in Europe; the new flagship Mondeo, based on the US Ford Fusion model; and the new Transit Connect commercial van.
In addition, Mulally also revealed that Ford apparently has plans underway to bring the Mustang car as well as the company's medium-sized SUV, the Edge, to the European markets.
With the Ford executives noting that the automaker is looking at a sales figure of 1 million SUVs in Europe in the coming six year-period, Ford's global marketing chief Jim Farley said that the "small SUV segment in Europe will double in the next five years;" while Stephen Odell - Ford's head of Europe - said that the company was "fully aware of the profitability situation across the dealer network in Europe."
