Ford Motor to launch CNG version of F-150 pickup truck

Ford Motor to launch CNG version of F-150 pickup truckUS automotive giant, Ford Motor has said that it is planning to launch a new version of its popular F-150 pickup truck that will be powered by a engine burning compressed natural gas, which is much cleaner burning fuel as an alternative fuel source to gasoline or diesel.

The new version will be launched this fall and will feature a 3.7-liter V6 engine and a factory-installed prep package, the company said. The 2014 F-150 truck will be capable of running either on CNG or gasoline through separate fuel systems in the vehicle. Ford is already offering CNG optimal on its heavy duty pickup trucks.

Ford said that it will be the only company offering a half-ton pickup running on CNG. Rivals General Motors and Chrysler Group offer the alternative on some of their pick up trucks. The new model will expand the total number of Ford's CNG models to eight models, including CNG-capable E-series vans. Ford was able to sell 11,000 trucks that use natural gas during the previous year.

"Businesses and fleet customers have been asking Ford to make F-150 available with CNG capability to take advantage of the fuel's low price and clean emissions," Jon Coleman, Ford's fleet sustainability and technology manager, said in a statement.
