Footage of JorunnaParvagoes Viral on Twitter

Last week, the internet erupted images and footage of Jorunnaparva, a sea slug that looks very similar to a furry bunny. The Verge said stated that the sea slug looks like ‘gooey candy bunnies’.

As per experts, the slug is one of a variety of marine animals known as nudibranchs, soft-bodied mollusks that shed their shells after they’ve passed through the larval stage of development.

The species has been earlier known to scientists but it gained popularity when a Twitter user Iwabuchi posted the images online.

The slugs grow just over an inch in length, and are typically found off the coasts of Japan and the Philippines. Other varieties of this group can be found in the Atlantic Ocean and around the coasts of Ireland.

It has rabbit-like ears called rhinophores which help them to detect the scent of nearby food. Jorunna can retract their rhinophores to protect them from being damaged.

The Jorunna genus was first described in 1845, but scientists were not aware about parva species until identified in 1938 by Japanese malacologistKikutaro Baba.

Footage from a diving school captured these 2cm-long, fluffy-looking underwater creatures off the coast of Japan. The footage was originally captured by Japan-based Dive Store Exiles in the Kumomi region of the country in March last year, but it started trending on Twitter over the weekend.

The school said, “Kumomi boasts one of the best natural landscapes on the Izu Peninsula. It is famous for its complex and rich underwater terrain including the sea slug and is known as ‘jewel of the sea’”.

Usually parva are of different shades but those shown in the video are white with patches of black caryophyllidia.sc
