Flu vaccines now available through Humboldt County Department of Health and Human Services at its Public Health Clinic
According to a DHHS press release, flu vaccines are now accessible through the Humboldt County Department of Health and Human Services at its Public Health Clinic. Generally, the flu season kick starts in October and can last through May.
Immunity to flu builds up generally two weeks after receiving the vaccine, so public health officials have recommended all the people to get vaccinated well in time in the season.
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has recommended that everyone who is older than six months should get vaccinated against the flu. According to CDC, the people who are at high risk for developing flu-related complications include children below 5, adults older than 65, pregnant women and the ones who have certain medical conditions, and that they must get vaccinated.
In the release, Susan Buckley, DHHS public health director, said that people could feel that they don’t require a flu shot. Susan Buckley said, “If so, think about getting vaccine on behalf of those you know who are more vulnerable than you — grandchildren, friends and family who are pregnant or may be immune compromised. You’ll stay healthy as well as protecting those around you”.
Every year, the flu virus changes, and vaccines are formulated keeping in mind the changes in the virus. The release mentioned that as the virus changes, every year a new vaccine is required to maintain immunity.
Besides getting vaccinated, people can prevent viruses spread by properly cleaning their hands, covering their mouth and nose while sneezing or coughing and staying at home when they are not well.
