Five people killed in storm in the Philippines
Manila - Five people were killed and four remained missing in various accidents in areas pummeled by storm Hagupit in the Philippines, relief officials said Tuesday.
Two of the fatalities were drowned in a swollen river in the central province of Antique, two were buried in landslides in the northern city of Baguio and one was electrocuted in the northern province of La Union.
Rescuers were also struggling to extricate 13 miners trapped in a flooded shaft in a goldmine in Itogon town in Benguet province, 225 kilometres north of Manila.
Chief Superintendent Eugene Martin, a regional police chief, said they were still studying if they can blow up the mine entrance to let out the water, but it might cause the mine to collapse.
"We have not yet decided on what to do," he said. "The blast may do more harm than good."
The weather bureau said Hagupit, with maximum sustained winds of 160 kilometres per hour and gusts of up to 195 kilometres per hour, continue to generate more rains and big waves as it moves away from the country.
Hagupit was moving towards the general direction of Hong Kong at a speed of 22 kilometres per hour. (dpa)
