Experts begin work on documenting temple treasuresA team experts constituted by the Supreme Court of India has started scientific documentation of the treasure that were unearthed from Sree Padmanabhaswamy temple in Thiruvananthapuram.

The work began with the joint meeting of the two committees appointed by the apex court to create documentation for the treasures. A panel headed by conservationist Dr M V Nair will use electronic gadgets and devices from state-run Keltron to carry out their assigned tasks.

According to people closer to the matter, the committee will first open two chambers that mostly contains articles like silver and brass utensils and lamps, which are brought out twice a year by priests for festivities. These articles will be recorded and documented by the panel.

The second panel, a oversight committee on temple treasures headed by former High Court judge M N Krishnan will work along with the other committee in the temple. The oversight committee had opened four of the six vaults of the temple last year and found precious articles, news that attracted worldwide attention.

The panel has been asked to ascertain the monetary value of the articles, which is estimated to be around Rs. 1 lakh crore. However, several experts and historians have said that it is not appropriate to fix a price tag of such articles due to their cultural and heritage value.
