Elderly man to receive gift of life from healthy young woman

A waitress at Hooters in Georgia is going to donate her kidney to a longtime regular customer of the restaurant.

Mariana Villarreal is donating her kidney to patron Don Thomas who lost both his kidney to cancer. Villarreal was inspired to donate because her grandma recently died of kidney failure

She said, “I wasn’t able to do anything for my grandma but if Don can live two more years, happy as he’s ever been, that’s fine with me. That's not up to me. I did my part, now it's God's turn to keep him alive”.

Dr. Harrison Pollinger, of the Piedmont Transplant Institute, said the duo is scheduled to undergo the surgery Friday morning. He mentioned that both donor and recipient should be able to live healthy lives after the surgery.

He added that a person can live their whole life with one just kidney. He/she only needs one kidney for normal kidney function.

When Marian offered to donate her kidney to Thomas after hearing about his plight, he was stunned by the offer. He mentioned that the waitress had only been here for a short time and he barely knew her when she made the offer.

He was grateful to the near-stranger, who took it upon herself to give away a piece of herself to save him.

It is not the first time a stranger has donated a kidney to someone in need. On Reddit, a woman found her kidney donor. The transplant surgery took place in Augusta, Ga. Two of them are now close friends.
