Egg prices in Wisconsin and other states increase

Egg prices have increased in Wisconsin and other states as a result of the bird flu outbreak. According to reports, the price at the supermarket increased three times.

Some grocery stores will not even run egg promotions as they have been asked by some suppliers to do so. Some restaurants have also increased prices of their breakfast menus that include eggs; they will also limit the time of serving breakfast.

According to a study from Iowa State University, approximately 12% of the national chicken flock has been lost as a result of the bird flu. Four newspapers in Iowa on Tuesday covered the news on front pages.

The Des Moines Register reported 'Egg prices triple'. The Iowa City Press-Citizen also published the same story and one was from the Associated Press regarding import of European eggs in order to deal with the supply shortage. The story from AP was published on front page of the Quad City Times. The Sioux City Journal also covered a similar story regarding the cancellation of poultry shows.

This problem has emerged as a result of an avian flu outbreak. The outbreak has created problem for farmers across the United States, however the upper Midwest area has been affected the most. More than 40 million chickens and turkeys have been destroyed in an attempt to prevent the spread of the virus. According to Roberto Ferdman, the majority were egg-laying hens. As a result of this, there is an egg shortage that has led to increased prices.
