Dutch plan new windpark far out in North Sea
Amsterdam - A consortium in the Netherlands plans to build a windpark in the North Sea 75 kilometres off the coast, the furthest ever distance from land for such a venture.
The group, which includes major energy providers RWE, Offshore Wind and Eneco, presented their plan to Dutch Economy Minister Maria van der Hoeven on Wednesday.
Located in waters 30-35 metres deep, the windpark will have 20-60 turbines, but will not be visible from land.
With a capacity of 100 to 300 megawatts, the turbine park is intended to provide 100,000 to 300,000 households with electricity.
The Dutch government wants its windparks on the North Sea to have a combined capacity of 6,000 megawatts by 2020.
