Domain registration soon to cross 200 million landmark
A silver jubilee period since the first domain name was registered and now, according to a new finding it is believed that the numbers of authorized domain names have crossed the 192 million mark.
Verisign, the network infrastructure company reports that eleven million domain names were registered on the internet in the fourth quarter of last year. It sees a boost in the number from 15 million on aggregate since the end of
2008 and now quickly approaching 200 million altogether.
This list includes new client intakes and also the renewed client list. The well-known .com and .net domain names achieved 96.7 million by year end of 2009, a seven percent overall growth from the same quarter last year. Also it sees a stable renewal rate of 71 per cent - 70.5 per cent in the previous quarter.
Researchers working at the report said: "It took some time for .com to take off. Two and a half years after the first registration, only 100 total .com domain name registrations existed. Then with the '.com boom', nearly 20 million names registered in the next two years."
It was the surfacing of e-business as well as early speculation which fuelled in the speedy growth of the registration business. As the reports are to be believed the .uk domain is still proving to be popular as the third most registered regional domain after .cn for China and .de for Germany.
