Delhi High Court grants bail to KalmadiThe Delhi High Court has granted bail to former chief of Commonwealth Games Organising Committee chief, Suresh Kalmadi.

Suresh Kalmadi was arrested in April 2011 for allegedly being involved in corrupt practices. He is blamed for sanctioning inflated contract for timing equipment and scoreboards for the mega sporting event that has been tainted with the scam.

The Commonwealth Games Delhi 2010 was marred by allegations of corruption besides some delays in construction work. Several of Mr. Kalmadi's supporters and aides were arrested for also being involved in corruption after the Games.

The judges at the High Court also decided to grant bail to Organising Committee Director General V K Verma. Mr Kalmadi, who is a Congress MP has been in jail for 10 months and has now been asked to pay a surety of five lakhs.

Mr. Kalmadi, Mr. Verma and nine others are accused of awarding a Rs. 141-crore contract to Swiss firm for installing timing equipment for the Games at a very high rate. This caused a loss of over Rs. 90 crore to the state exchequer. Mr. Kalmadi is accused of conspiracy, forgery, misconduct and provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which is investigating the scam, has spoken against the bail saying trail is set to begin and he must remain in jail.
