Singur, Sept 16: Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) is luring displaced farmers with an enhanced rehabilitation package including cash assistance, land and community development plans.

CPI-M state Secretary Biman Bose told in a huge rally at Singur, the controversial site of Tata Motors' 'Nano' small car plant said that those whose land has been acquired but have not taken money would be given 50 per cent extra compensation, in addition to the 10 per cent offered earlier if they accept it by September 22.

The new rehabilitation package, however, was not acceptable to Trinamool Congress.

Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee, who has been opposing the land acquisition on behalf of the farmers forced to give up their lands by the State Government, is scheduled to hold a similar show of numbers today.

On Sunday, the West Bengal Government issued quarter page advertisements in local newspapers offering a revised rehabilitation package for persons affected by the project in Singur.

The Left Front is trying its level best to ensure that the Tata Motors project remains in the state.

Earlier, Tata Motors Ltd appreciated the State Government's initiative to help with its small car project, but did not say whether it will start work to end a deadlock.

Tata Motors company had suspended work at the factory in Singur early this month and threatened to look at alternative sites after local people backed by Trinamool Congress protested.

The Nano project has been mired in a land row since the snub-nosed, 2,300 dollars car was unveiled in a blaze of publicity in January.

Farmers unwilling to give up their lands had demanded 300 acres of farmland from the factory complex.

The government says it can return over 70 acres and compensate by paying more money to farmers, but they have refused the offer. (ANI)
