Climate science wizard warns 2 degrees Celsius of global warming is highly dangerous
A new paper released this week by Dr. James Hansen showed that threat to humanity by global warming can't be curbed by even achieving 2 degrees Celsius target. Dr. Hansen, a well-known name in the field of climate science, said through his paper that the sea levels rise is setting to rise by as much as 10 feet in the next 50 years.
The paper will be published online in the European Geosciences Union journal Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics Discussion later this week. The paper claims that there is enough evidence to show that sea levels go up by 16 to 30 feet even if average temperatures rise by 1 degree Celsius than today.
The paper drafted by Hansen and 16 co-authors is an eye opener for policy makers that there is a need to do much more than just achieving current greenhouse-gas reduction goals. World leaders are of the belief that it is good enough to limit average warming to 2 degrees Celsius to save the humanity from devastating effects of global warming.
"The message for policymakers is that we have a global crisis that calls for international cooperation to reduce emissions as rapidly as practical", wrote the authors.
The scientists wrote that multi-meter sea level rise will become practically unavoidable if high emissions continue at the rate they currently are. It would be highly dangerous for society and economy.
The Washington Post's Chris Mooney has urged other climate experts to test the accuracy of the paper.
