Christina Han, a Vancouver dermatologist, talks about sun protection
Experts say always apply sunscreen before stepping out in the sun. It helps save from harmful UBA and UVB rays that lead to skin damage and many problems associated with it. Its application is necessary, even when there are clouds outside.
Christina Han, Vancouver dermatologist, talked about many aspects related to sun protection. Han said there are many misconceptions regarding sun care when it comes to application of sunscreens and the amount that is required to be applied. Most of the people are aware that it should be applied immediately after wet sports or sweating, but don't know the proper amount required to provide an adequate sun protection, Han added.
Now, the question arises how much sunscreen is required to protect against harmful effects of the sun. Han said that the general guideline is that an entire shot glass of sunscreen for a full, adult-sized body should be used. And it is more than the quantity of sunscreen people usually apply.
According to Han, most of the sun damage incurred later in life is associated with sun exposure in teenage and therefore prevention is quite important as treatment in the beginning is much easier than later complications.
There are also many other things that one can do for protection against harmful effects of the sun apart from application of sunscreen. Han said that a wide-brimmed hat could be worn for protection and sunglasses and sleeves are all equally important since there is still some sun exposure even when sunscreen is used.
