Chinese officials visit Hungary amid tight security

ChinaBudapest  - A delegation of Chinese officials led by Jia Qinglin, a high-ranking member of the Chinese Communist party, was due to meet Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsany in Budapest Thursday amid tight security aimed at heading off pro-Tibetan protests.

Police cordoned off parliament and helicopters buzzed over the city centre as the 100-strong delegation prepared to meet the Hungarian premier.

Amnesty International and the Friends of Tibet, whose members broke windows at the Chinese Embassy during an earlier demonstration, said they would demonstrate at parliament and outside the Chinese delegation's hotel.

The turnout was low however, with a few dozen protestors waving Tibetan flags and a banner asking "What about the legacy of the Olypmics?"

Qinglin, who is a top-ranked member of the Politburo Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China and the former Mayor of Beijing, was in Budapest as part of a four-day tour of the region.

The delegation was in Romania on Wednesday and will continue onto Slovenia and Croatia. (dpa)
