China To Install Deep-Sea Mooring System In Arctic Ocean

China has decided that it will soon install its first annual deep-sea subsurface mooring system in the Artic Ocean. This will help the nation to monitor the long-term marine changes in the water body.

The data on temperature, salinity and speed of currents at various depths in the coming year in the ocean would be detected by this system.  The announcement was made by the members of the country’s third Artic expedition team.

They said, "It would facilitate studies of the impact of environmental changes in the Arctic Ocean on global climate, especially on Chinas”.

The team also said that it will also study the Polar Regions distinctive maritime resources and air quality and would also conduct comprehensive research on geological and meteorological conditions.

In 2003, China had deployed a 40-day mooring system in the Bering Sea.

Dr Chen Hong Xia, a member of the expedition team, said, “The system would be installed in the Chukchi Sea waters, where currents from the Pacific Ocean and the Atlantic Ocean converge. The area is considered to be of great importance to scientific research on water variation.”

Chinese Researchers, who plan to enter the Artic region in 2009, would retrieve the system, which will be installed by the third expedition in due course.
