Chewing Gum Helps Rid Brain Worms

Did you ever think that popping in a chewing gum could help you get rid of all those unwanted thoughts? Don't believe it, read on!

In a rather interesting finding, researchers from the University of Reading in UK, have reported that people who chew gum after listening to an engaging song, have a better ability of getting over it. What is more important, however, is the capability of extrapolating these results, of applying this approach to patients suffering from cognitive disorders.

The present study was conducted on 98 participants, who were made to listen to "Play Hard" by David Guetta and "Payphone" by Maroon 5. After having listened to the songs, they were asked not to think about the same for at least three minutes and to tap their fingers each time they did. The researchers found that subjects who chewed gum after listening to the songs reported a 33 percent improvement in getting over them, sooner than the subjects put in the study's control group.

Three other similar studies were also carried put to gauge the impact of chewing gum on brain worms, or 'earworms' as the researchers call them. In the first study, 44 members were made to listen to David Guetta featuring Flo Rida and Akon's 'Play Hard' twice. Next, they were put in two situation, one in which they chewed gum and one where they did not. They were asked to press the 'q' key if the song persisted in their head. It was concluded that, here again, chewing gum attracted lesser hits at 'q'.

Next, was a study on 18 subjects showing exactly the similar results. Finally, a 46 people experiment too yielded the same results.

Thus, chewing a piece of that sticky candy can, in fact, silence the redundant thoughts flooding one's mind. These findings can be replicated in medical research and help cure mental conditions like OCD and the like.
