CBI court summons Sunil Bharti Mittal and six others as accused in 2002 spectrum case

CBI court summons Sunil Bharti Mittal and six others as accused in 2002 spectrum caseA special CBI court on Tuesday summoned Bharti Airtel CMD Sunil Bharti Mittal and six others as accused in the 2002 spectrum allocation case.

All the seven accused were asked to present in the court in person on April 11, next date of hearing in the case.

Hutchison Essar’s former MD Asim Ghosh, Essar Group promoter Ravi Ruia, former telecom secretary Shyamal Ghosh and the three telecom firms Bharti Cellular Ltd, Hutchison Max Telecom and Sterling Cellular Ltd, were also named among the accused.

The CBI judge said that there was adequate incriminating material on record to proceed against the accused persons.

Passing the summon order, the judge said, “On perusal of the record, I am satisfied that there is enough incriminating material on record to proceed against the accused persons.”

In December last year, the charge-sheet filed by the CBI had named only the government conspirators – former telecom minister late Pramod Mahajan, former telecom secretary Shyamal Ghosh. Not a single executive from a private company was named in the charge-sheet.

The promoters and executive of the private telecom firms were named in a charge-sheet after the court pulled up the CBI, saying how it was possible that only government servants were responsible for the conspiracy, and not the private persons.

The conspiracy had caused loss of Rs more than 845 crores to the government exchequer.
