Cartoonists shouldn’t cross their limits: Mumbai Police Commissioner advises
As controversy over the arrest of cartoonist Aseem Trivedi is still persistent, Mumbai Police Commissioner Dr. Satyapal Singh has advised artists and cartoonists that they shouldn’t cross their limits.
Mumbai police had arrested Aseem on charges of sedation last Saturday. He was accused of creating and displaying questionable caricatures of the Constitution, the national emblem, and Parliament.
Police Commissioner Dr. Satyapal said police didn’t need the controversial cartoonist anymore for the investigation, and added that this was not a big case.
Speaking about the cartoonist, he also gave a piece of advice to artists, saying, “I would like to give a message to artists and cartoonists that they should not cross limits."
Meanwhile, the detained cartoonist refused to apply for bail, saying that he didn’t do any wrong. He insisted that he was proud of whatever he did, and would do it repeatedly. He underlined that he would not apply for bail till sedition charges labeled against him were dropped.
Press Council of India (PCI) chairman Markandey Katju defended Asseem, and said he would initiate criminal prosecution against both the police officers who arrested Aseem, as well as the politicians who are always quick to describe any disapproval of their venality as anti-national.
Aseem was arrested on the basis of a complaint filed by Amit Katarnayea - a member of Republican Party of India.
