A campaign’s group members are asking the Food and Drug Administration to approve a pill aimed at restoring lost libido in women. The campaign has even accused the FDA of gender bias for sanctioning Viagra and 25 other such drugs that help men have sex, but there is none for women.

The campaign known as ‘Even the Score’ is backed by the drug’s developer and some women’s group. In an online petition, the campaign has been able to gather more than 40,000 signatures. In the current age, gender equality should be the right of everyone and especially when it comes to access to treatments for sexual dysfunction.

The FDA has rejected the drug, flibanserin, twice on the basis that its benefits get overpowered by side effects like sleepiness, dizziness and nausea. On Thursday, the FDA advisers will once again consider whether or not the drug should be approved.

Sprout Pharmaceutical has submitted new data and also a study to demonstrate that the pill does not impair driving. Now, it all depends on the FDA as it will interpret the old data in a new way and also whether or not the politics of such drugs has changed.

The drug company is being backed by the National Council of Women's Organizations, the Black Women's Health Imperative, Jewish Women International and many other medical groups. A spokeswoman for the FDA said that the agency strongly rejects claims of gender bias.
