Bopanna breezes into second round of Malaysian Open
Indian tennis star Rohan Bopanna has upset the World number 51 Jose Acasuso of Argentina to storm into the second round of the Proton Malaysian in Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday. While his compatriot Somdev Devvarman crashed out of the Thailand Open after going down in the first round.
Bopanna, world no 447, ousted his much higher ranked opponent 4-6 6-3 6-4 in the first round of men's singles event of the US $947,750 hard court tournament. Bopanna lost the first set but the 29-year old energetic player won next two sets to win the match.
Acasuso saved five breakpoints to clinch the first set 6-4. In second set, Bopanna gave away only 6 points on his serve and earned a breakpoint to level the match. Bopanna broke his opponent once again in the final set to win the match.
Bopanna will now clash with the fourth seeded and world no. 12 Fernando Gonzalez of Chile in the second round. Gonzalez will play his first match in the tournament as he had got bye in the first round.
Meanwhile, the wild card Somdev has lost to Latvian Ernests Gulbis 6-7(7), 2-6 in the first round of US $608,500 hard-court tournament in Bangkok. Somdev converted only one out of four breakpoints in the first set and he was broken twice by his opponent in the second round.
