Blazers' Greg Oden to miss 2-4 weeks with foot injury
Los Angeles - Portland Trail Blazers prize rookie Greg Oden can't seem to stay healthy.
Oden made his long-awaited NBA debut on Tuesday night but will now be sidelined for the next two to four weeks after suffering a right-foot injury.
The top pick in the 2007 draft, Oden missed the entire season after undergoing microfracture surgery on his right knee. The latest setback is expected to keep him out for between six and 14 games.
He played only 11 minutes and went scoreless as the mighty LA Lakers blitzed the Blazers 96-76 in the season opener before leaving with the foot injury late in the first quarter.
"I was trying to go get a rebound, and kind of came down on Derek Fisher's foot on like the third play of the game," Oden explained. "I kind of fell and didn't think twice about it".
Though x-rays taken at the time were inconclusive, an MRI on Wednesday confirmed Oden suffered a mid-lateral foot sprain, according to the Trail Blazers.
"It's just a little setback but you come down on someone's foot and there's nothing you can do," Oden said, "It happens, it sucks, but I'll just keep on working."
Naturally, Blazers coach Nate McMillan was deeply disappointed with Oden's latest injury.
"You don't want injuries, and he's worked so hard throughout this summer to get himself back," McMillan said.
"We we tried to do everything we could to get him ready for the season and the opener, and he steps on a guy's foot." (dpa)
