An announcement has been made that a bear at SeaWorld San Diego was artificially inseminated. According to experts, the 19-year-old polar bear will be checked this fall in order to see whether she is pregnant.

Both SeaWorld and the Cincinnati Zoo are together putting efforts to get Snowflake pregnant. As per SeaWorld, representatives of the Cincinnati Zoo gathered semen from a male polar bear at the Brookfield Zoo in Chicago.

According to animal care specialists, they are planning to check Snowflake's progesterone level early this fall in order to see if she's with cub. SeaWorld said that females normally give birth to one to three cubs at a time.

"If Snowflake does become pregnant, we would expect to see increase in her progesterone in the early fall, so August/September, and if that embryo does implant and develop, then we would expect to see a cub, or cubs, around November to January", said Justine O'Brien, scientific director of the SeaWorld & Busch Gardens Reproductive Research Center.

Snowflake was moved to the Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Aquarium in 2014 with a male polar bear but that time the attempt wasn't fruitful. According to theme park officials, said polar bears come under endangered species as their sea ice habitat is decreasing.

According to O'Brien, the threat makes it significant to know about polar bear biology, particularly reproduction, so that they can be conserved more efficiently. O'Brien said that this information is useful for managing population of the zoo and also for knowing what's going on in the wild.
