Atlas V targeting Thursday liftoff from Launch Complex 41 with a Cygnus cargo module carrying ISS supplies
United Launch Alliance is looking forward to roll its 12th and final rocket of the year this week to a Cape Canaveral Air Force Station launch pad. The Atlas V rocket has targeted a 5:55 pm Thursday liftoff from Launch Complex 41. It will have a Cygnus cargo module, containing International Space Station supplies.
The exact timings are not finalized yet as it may differ slightly and will be confirmed in the starting of this week once the space station adjusts its orbit for placing itself in the proper position for Soyuz crew vehicles travelling in the coming month.
On Monday, launch teams are planning to carry out a dress rehearsal of the Atlas V countdown at the Cape.
Mission managers will meet on Tuesday for reviews to confirm their willingness to launch. In case no major issues arise, ULA would roll the roughly 20-story rocket to the pad on Wednesday at 10 am.
Orbital ATK's Cygnus spacecraft is all full with over 7,000 pounds of food, equipment and science experiments required for supporting the station crew, consisting 6 persons, orbiting 250 miles above Earth. The mission is going to be the 60th flight by an Atlas V since 2002, but its rocket’s first ever supporting a space station mission.
A ‘Space Coast Launch Viewing Party’ has been sponsored by the Space Coast Office of Tourism. The party will begin at 3 pm at Port Canaveral's Exploration Tower, situated at 670 Dave Nisbet Drive, on Thursday.
