Astronomers witness Formation of a Galaxy

Using the European Southern Observatory's ALMA telescope, astronomers have spotted a still forming galaxy, which was still growing when the universe was just 800 million years old. The finding has highlighted about a time in the history of cosmos about which not much is known.

Researchers want to know about how the early galaxies have formed because they will be able to know about the evolution of the cosmos. In order to know the same the researchers take help of telescopes.

In the latest research, the astronomers have used European Southern Observatory's Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) in Chile. This powerful telescope can detect infrared light in order to look out for the signs of these galaxies.

The researchers wanted to study a dimmer galaxy that would have played an important role in reionizing the hydrogen-filled universe. "The galaxies in our sample have [star formation rates of 5 - 15 solar masses per year], more typical of the bulk of galaxies at these early epochs", affirmed the researchers.

The researchers looked for the glow from CII, an ionized form of carbon, as it will allow them to locate cold gas from which new stars start to condense. The same was found in a galaxy called BDF 3299. The findings are in coordination with the recent models of galaxy formation.
