Astronomers discover Exoplanet with Four Parent Stars
Astronomers of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) discovered a new exoplanet which is attached to four parent stars. According to reports, the exoplanet is about 136 light-years away and has been found by using a new instrument developed with Indian collaboration. The astronomers also discovered another planet in the care of a three star family, the reports stated.
As per the reports, the astronomers had made the discoveries by using a new Robo-AO adaptive optics system, which was developed by the Inter-University Center for Astronomy and Astrophysics in India, and the California Institute of Technology.
The new system and PALM-3000 adaptive optics system of the United States space agency's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena and Caltech were fitted to telescopes at the Palomar Observatory. The new exoplanet has been found attached to four stars. As per the reports, the four star system is known as '30 Ari', and is located in the direction of the constellation Aries. Previously, the planet was thought to have only three stars. But, after using new instruments, astronomers came to know about the fourth parent stars.
According to the reports, this is the second time, when astronomers have found a planet in a quadruple star system. Before this, the first four-star planet, KIC 4862625, was discovered by citizen scientists in 2013. That time, the scientists had used public data from NASA's Kepler mission.
Lewis Roberts, researcher from JPL and lead author of the new discovery, said, "Star systems come in myriad forms. There can be single stars, binary stars, triple stars, even quintuple star systems. It's amazing the way nature puts these things together". The findings have been published in the journal Astronomical Journal.
The reports further stated that the system's gaseous planet is about 10 times the mass of Jupiter, which is the largest planet in the solar system. It orbits its primary star every 335 days, as per the reports.
