All the pressure on Hamilton, says Massa
Hamburg - Ferrari's Felipe Massa believes all the pressure is on title rival Lewis Hamilton ahead of the final Formula One race of the season, Sunday's Brazilian Grand Prix at Interlagos.
The McLaren-Mercedes driver Hamilton holds a seven-point lead over Massa following his victory in Shanghai on October 19 and will be crowned the youngest F1 world champion ever at the age of 23 if he finishes in fifth place or higher.
Even if Hamilton finishes outside the points, he will still clinch the drivers' title, if Massa finishes third or lower.
But despite the destination of the championship being out of his hands, the Brazilian feels confident that he could still snatch the title from Hamilton.
"It's true I have a tougher job than Lewis in terms of the points situation, but my own objective for the weekend is much more straightforward than his. I only have to focus on winning the race on Sunday afternoon, hopefully with my teammate (Kimi Raikkonen) second behind me," Massa told the Ferrari website.
"The only thing I am thinking about is winning. After that, the matter is not in my hands and we will have to wait and see exactly what and how much we have won."
Hamilton went into last season's Brazilian GP in a similar position, holding a four-point lead over then McLaren teammate Fernando Alonso and seven clear of Ferrari's Raikkonen.
However, a disappointing seventh-place finish coupled with a victory for Raikkonen saw the Finn pip the McLaren driver to the title.
Massa believes history can repeat itself.
"For sure Lewis will try to put pressure on me, but I have zero pressure, because I have nothing to lose," said Massa.
"I have my people behind me and all the pressure will be on him, especially when you think what happened at this race last year. I can't wait for the final Sunday of the season."
Massa will also have a partisan home crowd on his side at Interlagos, as well as a greater familiarity with a circuit he grew up on.
"I will have a huge following here in my home town," explained the Brazilian, who won his home GP in 2006.
"I love this track, I grew up here and I know all its little tricks and secrets. I really like to race at home and I think I race better at home."
Although McLaren were dominant in Shanghai, Massa feels this is no indicator of how the teams will perform this weekend.
"It's impossible to predict what will happen in the Brazilian Grand Prix, but I think our car has always been very good at this circuit, even if I cannot explain exactly why," he said. dpa gb
