Airtel reduces network’s gas emissions by 11%India leading telecom service provider, Bharti Airtel has been able to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions per terabyte in its network infrastructure by about 11 per cent during the financial year 2011-2012, according to the company's first Sustainability Report published today.

The company was also able to save about 20 million KWh of energy through various measures like consolidation of its facilities and improving energy efficiency in its data centers in the country. The company is planning to work towards sustainability and social inclusion through initiatives like bringing digital services to millions of people through an extended and efficient network with deep internet penetration among its subscribers.

"Over 50% of these rural subscribers do not have bank accounts. We believe that the mobile industry, which covers a significant mass of India's population, can utilise its existing national coverage and infrastructure, and collaborate with banks to play a significant role in enabling financial inclusion as well as payment services across India," the company in the report.

Bharti Airtel has also indicated that till work to enhance financial, education and health services through mobile phones. Its Airtel Money service already allows cashless transactions in rural areas and the company's mobile health services facilitate health awareness, real time treatment and monitoring of diseases remotely by experts.
