After ‘Slumdog’ is it ‘White Tiger’ for the west?

white tigerAfter the movie loosely based on Vikas Swarup’s new novel ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ impressed the world and swept the Oscars, looks like another Indian author’s book will be adapted soon.

This piece of news comes close on the heels of the stupendous success achieved by Mumbai-based rags to riches story that snatched 8 Oscar trophies and raked millions at the box office. We’re talking about Aravind Adiga's recent Booker prize winner ‘The White Tiger’.

The buzz is that the producer of the Oscar nominated ‘The Revolutionary Road’ John Hart, has acquired the rights for the screen adaptation of the book that centres around the life of an ambitious rickshaw driver Balram Halwai.

Reports say that the film will be made under Hart's newly formed production house Smuggler Films. It will be produced in association with Jolyon Symonds' and Nicholas Greene's Ascension

However, Hart has pointed out that his film would be different from Danny Boyle's potboiler.

It’s been said: "While Slumdog paints a romantic portrait of the rising India, in which anyone can be a millionaire, The White Tiger suggests that to succeed, murder may be the only option. The project offers a decidedly darker message than Danny Boyle's Best Picture winner.”

So there might be more India based glory on world stage in the days to come. Let’s wait and watch!-Sampurn Media
