430,000 Assamese stranded by floods

Morigaon (Assam), Sept. 14: At least 430,000 Assamese in over 4000 villages have been affected by the latest bout of monsoon-related floods.

The hardest hit of the 21 districts in the state includes Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, Cahchar and Morigaon.

Several rivers, including the main Brahmaputra, are in spate. The State Government has banned the movement of ferries and boats. Makeshift boats and rafts, however, are being allowed to move through the floodwaters.

"We are facing hardship. There is no food. We cannot leave our houses, nor can stay here with our children," said Niru Deka, a Morigaon resident.

According to the State's Department of Agriculture, crops worth over seven billion rupees have been destroyed.
"All our crops have been washed away. The river water has spilled over. We are drinking water from the tube well. There is no grass for the cows to eat. There is no medicine and no doctor at the veterinary hospitals," claimed Bhola Nath Deka, the headman of Bhakat Gaon village in Morigaon.

Since the annual monsoon rains and floods began in June, about 50 people has been killed in Assam and more than 12 million people have affected. (With Inputs from ANI)
