33 million Americans expected to hit Roads during Memorial Day Weekend

Memorial Day could see millions of Americans hitting the road this year. Celebrated on last Monday of May each year, it aims at commemorating sacrifices made by the men and women serving in the country's armed forces. Highest traffic over the last 10 years is predicted by AAA on this year's Memorial Day.

Memorial Day weekend, according to AAA report, will see 33 million Americans driving 50 miles on an average on Memorial Day weekend.

People come out with their family and friends to celebrate Memorial Day every year; local police has urged residents to comply with driving rules and pay extra attention at high traffic locations to ensure safety of themselves and their loved ones.

"We issue these estimates to draw attention to risks on the roadways and encourage drivers to take extra precautions so needless tragedies can be prevented", said Deborah Hersman, National Safety Council president and CEO.

A national holiday was announced on Memorial Day in 1971 and since then, the traffic has kept on increasing nicely. People this year are likely to spend more on leisure activities amid low gasoline prices.

Medical experts have to say that people should prevent themselves from getting swayed away by the fun they have outside and not increase their calories intake by consuming more stuff. Food poisoning is a big issue with Americans, with 48 millions affected by it each year, according to data released by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Health experts suggest proper grilling of food items and especially meats to keep food poisoning at bay.

NSC has estimated nearly 41,000 injuries during Memorial Day this year.
