A ‘Warrant by mistake’ led to Tampa cop shooting
Officials said on Wednesday that the warrant that led two Tampa, Fla., police officers to try to arrest a man who allegedly shot them may have been a mistake.
The St. Petersburg Times has reported that Dontae Rashawn Morris, 24, is now charged with two counts of first-degree murder. Early on Tuesday, when the car in which he was a passenger was pulled over, he was wanted on a felony warrant and two misdemeanor warrants from Jacksonville for allegedly passing bad checks.
When Morris was released from prison two months ago, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office told the Department of Corrections it was not interested in getting him back there to face the charges. But the sheriff's office failed to remove a statewide extradition alert.
She was not "going to start pointing the fingers of blame," Tampa Police Chief Jane Castor told the Times.
She added, "And frankly, it's not going to bring the officers back,\."
The bad checks, to add to .3. the confusion, were passed while Morris was in prison, suggesting someone else may have stolen his identity. (With inputs from Agencies)
