Vonn triumphs in super-g to break US World Cup record
Tarvisio, Italy - Lindsey Vonn raced into the record books as the most successful female in US alpine ski history when she charged to victory in the World Cup super-g in Tarvisio on Sunday.
It was a 19th World Cup win for 24-year-old Vonn who had drawn level with the record held by Tamara McKinney earlier this month.
The victory moves Vonn, who won the super-g along with downhill at the world championships in Val d'Isere earlier this month, closer to defending her World Cup title.
Nearest rival Maria Riesch of Germany was down the field in 17th while Sweden's Anja Paerson failed to finish. Vonn has 1,374 points, with Riesch on 1075 and Paerson on
960.
Vonn, who also won the last World Cup super-g race in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany on February 1, has now won three of the last five World Cup races and finished second in the other two - both in Tarvisio on Friday and Saturday.
She clocked 1 minute 21.72 seconds for a 0.51-second lead over Fabienne Suter of Switzerland, with Slovenia's Tina Maze third, 0.67 seconds behind, to collect her sixth World Cup win of the season.
Vonn still has some way to go to catch Bode Miller's US record of 31 World Cup wins, but has bettered McKinney (1981-1987) in just over three years since winning her first race - a downhill - in Lake Louise on December 3, 2005.
She is now 18th in the women's all-time list led by Annemarie Moser Proell of Austria on 62. dpa
