United States could soon announce its Post-2020 Emissions Targets

A United Nations climate conference is scheduled at Paris in December with an aim to cut greenhouse gas emissions. The conference is intended to result in a post-2020 global agreement on reducing greenhouse gas releases.

It is expected that the United States will make announcement about its post-2020 emissions targets Tuesday. The US had already told about its aims in announcing a climate deal with China last November.

Meanwhile, the United States and Mexico decided to have a joint task force on climate policy co-operation on Friday when Mexico made announcements that its emissions will peak by 2026 and drop 22% below 'business as usual' levels by the year 2030.

The first developing nation to present its nationally determined contribution to the Paris organizers is Mexico. The Harper government emphasized that climate policies of Canada should be co-ordinated with their continental trading partners. The Harper government is not involved the new US-Mexico task force.

"Canada wants to ensure we have a complete picture of what the provinces and territories plan before we submit", said a spokesman for Environment Minister Leona Aglukkaq.

As per experts, the government is going to present its nationally determined contribution well in advance of the December summit. According to a US-Mexico joint statement that posted Friday by the White House emphasized the significance of jointly addressing climate in their integrated economy.

Stephen Harper, Prime Minister said last December that Canada will not be able to regulate its oil and gas sector without coordinating with the US and Mexico. Louise Comeau, the executive director of Climate Action Network Canada said that the US-Mexico task force appears like bilateral groups that were set up by the Americans with China and India.
