Wellington  - Two people died and three were injured Friday when their small boat ran into a moored former Navy vessel in a bay on New Zealand's South Island, news reports said.

One seriously injured survivor from the accident in Waikawa Bay near Picton was flown across Cook Strait to hospital in the capital, Wellington, by rescue helicopter, the TV3 channel reported.

Police said they did not immediately know why the accident happened. (dpa)
