Two Chemical Compounds used in Plastic Containers found Hazardous for Health

A novel study has found two of the commonly used ingredients in plastic containers meant for food to be dangerous for health. The products carry DINP and DIDP, which are generally added to plastics to add durability, flexibility and transparency to them.

Earlier, the DEHP, a type of phthalate or phthalate, was added to these products. After the product was found to be carrying serious health risk, it was replaced with DINP and DIDP. Researchers from NYU Langone Medical Center have conducted a study on these two components.

The researchers tested the association between two components and blood pressure. For this, the researchers enrolled more than a thousand teens aged between 8 and 19 to test this link. In the second phase, the researchers assessed the link with diabetes and hypertension for which they included more than 350 teens.

Links were found between two chemicals and the increased risk of developing metabolic syndromes, including high blood pressure, hypertension and insulin resistance. Study’s lead researcher Dr. Leonardo Trasande said more tests should be carried out so that things can be stopped before a major loss takes place.

The researchers have also asked suggested people not microwaving food kept in these containers. It is always best to have fresh food. People can check for the presence of these chemicals by seeing the bottom of the containers for the numbers 7, 3, and 6.

“The FDA does regulate the plastics that come in contact with food, and the most important take-home message is to read the label on the package or the container”, said Dr. Natalie Azar, an NBC News medical director.
