Trader Joe's takes cashew stock off shelves over salmonella fears

Following fears of salmonella bacteria contamination, Trader Joe's has ordered the recall of its "Raw Cashew Pieces". The company has cited an alert by its supplier that some cashew bags may be laced with the bacteria.

The supermarket chain said it was particularly looking for bags carrying the label "BEST BEFORE 07.17.2016TF4." Please do not eat it, the company has posted on its website. The bacteria can cause illnesses such food poisoning and typhoid fever.

Trader Joe's said it did not want to take any chances and had, therefore, taken the entire raw cashew stock off shelves until as a precautionary measure even though no case of salmonella illness had been reported to date. The company has suspended the sale of the stock till the investigation it had ordered into the alleged lapse, if any, was complete.

The recall has been issued in stores spread across 30 states, including New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Connecticut.
