Tornadoes strikes Oklahoma, five killed

TornadoOfficials have said that Tornadoes struck Oklahoma Monday, heavily damaging homes and killing at least five people.

Oklahoma Department of Emergency Management spokesman Jerry Lojka told The Oklahoman that two people were killed in Oklahoma County and three were killed in Tecumseh County.

A twister struck a truck stop in Midwest City, resulting in the death of at least one person, Tulsa radio station KRMG reported.

The radio station further said that with severe thunderstorms producing several twisters, there were reports of damage near Oklahoma City, Medford, Ponca City and Yukon.

At least one person suffered minor injuries when a tornado hit in northwestern Oklahoma's Grant County near the Kansas border. One home was destroyed and two others damaged by that storm.

Witnesses said that a tornado on the city's east side heavily damaged homes and a convenience store, Oklahoma City's KOCO-TV reported.

One of the station's photographers reported seeing a funnel hit Interstates 40 and 240, flipping a vehicle on its side.

KOCO further said that another twister was blamed for overturned cars, trucks and boats on the east side of Norman where injuries were reported.

It was further reported by the Oklahoman that numerous funnel clouds were spotted in the Oklahoma City metropolitan area but it wasn't known how many actually touched down.

The newspaper further said that Wakita Police Chief Dean Bellin said he saw about five funnels near each other as baseball-size hail pummeled his area, blowing down power lines and causing other damage.

Bellin said, "For a while it looked like they would make one big one." (With Inputs from Agencies)
